It could be a virus or spyware but to me it sounds like it's a problem with windows not being activated. Like you said the perison you hired to install XP probably used a pirated copy. WGA (windows genuine advantage) is going to keep annoying you till you get a vaild key and activate windows unless you format and re-install the os.
